He studied under Rabbi Sadqa Hussein. n 1955, he became Chief Sephardic Rabbi. As a gesture of goodwill, he visited some kibbutzim, which at that time were predominantly Ashkenazi and secular. He was also emphatic that the Bene Israel, who had been rejected as Jews by other rabbis, were Jewish. In 1964, Pope Paul VI visited Israel but refused to visit the heads of other religions, insisting that they come visit him. In protest, Nissim boycotted this visit, insisting that he was willing to visit the Pope as long as there would be reciprocity if a chief rabbi came to Rome. He was the father of Moshe Nissim and Meir Benayahu. May the merit of Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim protect us all. Amen

 textהרב יצחק נסים (כ"ה בכסלו ה'תרנ"ו, 12 בדצמבר 1895 – ט' באב ה'תשמ"א, 9 באוגוסט 1981) היה הראשון לציון – הרב הראשי הספרדי לישראל – בין השנים ה'תשט"ו–ה'תשל"ג, 1955–1972. <h3 style="text-align:right">ביוגרפיה</h3> נולד לרחמים ועמאם בבגדאד, עיראק, ביום הראשון של חג החנוכה, ולכן נקרא "נסים". שם פרטי זה הפך לימים לשם משפחתו. למד תורה מפי הרב צדקה חוצין ועוד. עלה לארץ ישראל בשנת 1925 עם אשתו ויקטוריה, במסע שארך מספר חודשים על גבי חמורים. לאחר עלייתו לירושלים התיידד עם הרב חזקיה שבתי, הרב אברהם יצחק הכהן קוק, הרב שלמה אליעזר אלפנדרי ועוד. במקביל ללימודו עסק במסחר. בשנת 1951 התמודד לכנסת השנייה כמספר שתיים ברשימת אמוני ישראל של הרב אליהו כי טוב, אך הרשימה לא עברה את אחוז החסימה. בשנת 1953 התבקש על ידי הרב בן-ציון מאיר חי עוזיאל, הרב הראשי הספרדי, להמשיך את דרכו ולכהן אחריו כראשון לציון. בשנת ה'תשט"ו (1955) נבחר להיות הרב הספרדי הראשי כשקיבל 42 קולות, בהתמודדות מול הרב יעקב משה טולידאנו רבה של תל אביב שזכה ב-27 קולות. הרב נסים נחשב על ידי החוגים החרדיים כרב ליברלי והם פעלו להחליפו. בז' במרחשוון ה'תשל"ג (1972) הוחלפו הרב נסים והרב איסר יהודה אונטרמן על ידי הרבנים עובדיה יוסף ושלמה גורן, הרבנים הראשיים הראשונים שהוחלפו בחייהם. בשנת 1976 הוענק לרב נסים תואר דוקטור לשם כבוד מאוניברסיטת בר-איל. <h3 style="text-align:right"> פועלו</h3> בתפקידו כרב ראשי שאף הרב נסים להידברות גם עם הציבור החילוני וערך סיורים בקיבוצים. ביתו שימש מקום מפגש לאישי ציבור, פוליטיקאים ומלומדים, בהם גרשם שלום ושופט בית המשפט העליון חיים כהן. בזמן הפולמוס הגדול בנושא חוק "מיהו יהודי", פעל הרב כדי שהגדרת הלאום היהודי תיקבע לפי ההלכה ולא על בסיס הצהרת האדם שהוא יהודי. כחלק מהמאבק שלח הרב נסים מכתבים לרבני ישראל בעולם כדי שיביעו עמדתם בסוגיה זו. בנובמבר 1957 החרים הרב נסים את טקס הזיכרון שנערך ביום הזיכרון החמישי לנשיא חיים ויצמן, מכיוון שהטקס לא נערך בהתאם למסורת ישראל. הרב נסים סירב לצאת ולפגוש את האפיפיור פאולוס השישי בעת ביקורו בישראל בשנת 1964. המדינה התכוננה לקבל פניו בטקס ממלכתי, אשר במסגרתו היה צריך הראשון לציון ליטול חלק בקבלת פניו של האפיפיור במגידו. הרב נסים סירב, באמרו שאם עליו לצאת לקבל את פני האפיפיור, אזי על האפיפיור, כראש הדת הקתולית, להשיב ביקור לראש הדת היהודית, אחרת ייווצר הרושם שמעמד הדת היהודית נחות. במאמר ראשי בעיתון "הארץ" נכתב שכשם שביקורו של האפיפיור בארץ היה מאורע היסטורי לנוצרים, כך העובדה שהרב הראשי לא קיבל את פניו היה בו משום מעשה היסטורי ומתן תוקף לעצמאות מדינת ישראל. בשנת 1960, ביוזמת הרב נסים, הועלו עצמותיו של החיד"א לארץ ישראל והוא נקבר בהר המנוחות. הרב נסים הקים בית מדרש להכשרת רבנים, מבוגריו הראשון לציון הרב מרדכי אליהו (אשר הקים בעצמו מאוחר יותר בית מדרש במתכונת דומה). <h3 style="text-align:right">הנצחתו</h3> לאחר פטירתו הוקם על שמו מכון "יד הרב נסים" - מכון אקדמי תורני ייחודי המשלב מכון מחקר אקדמי יחד עם בית מדרש. על שמו רחובות בירושלים (בעבר רחוב בשכונת הר נוף וכיום בשכונת הר חומה), חיפה, חולון, רעננה ועוד, וכן בתי ספר יסודיים בערים רמלה ועפולה. נבחר לדמות המופת של החינוך הממלכתי דתי בשנת ה'תש"ף. <h3 style="text-align:right">משפחתו</h3> לרב נסים היו חמישה אחים, בהם הרב יחזקאל עזרא רחמים, שלמה ציון שנהרג על ידי המשטרה העיראקית בשל טעות בזיהוי והרב אברהם חיים רחמים, ראש ישיבה ומקובל, שהגיה את ספרי ה'בן איש חי' והיה תלמידו. בין ילדיו: פרופ' מאיר בניהו, חבר הכנסת והשר משה נסים והמפקחת על גני הילדים בירושלים וכותבת ספרי ההדרכה רות נסים. <h3 style="text-align:right">מתלמידיו</h3> הרב מרדכי אליהו הראשון לציון והרב הראשי לישראל הרב עזרא בצרי - לשעבר דיין בבית הדין הרבני הגדול בירושלים הרב יעקב משה הלל - ראש ישיבת 'אהבת שלום' ומגדולי המקובלים הרב משה טופיק - לשעבר דיין בבית הדין הרבני הגדול בירושלים <h3 style="text-align:right">מספריו</h3> שו"ת יין הטוב, חלק א-ב, (באתר HebrewBooks, מהדורת ירושלים ה'תשל"ט). מהדורה שלישית, ירושלים ה'תשס"ו. לדור ולדורות, חלק ראשון: מאמרים ונאומים, ירושלים תשע"ג לדור ולדורות, חלק שני: בקומה זקופה, ירושלים תשע"ז הרב נסים נפטר בתשעה באב ה'תשמ"א (1981). רעייתו ויקטוריה נפטרה בשנת ה'תשמ"ט (1988). זכותו תגן עלינו ועל כל ישראל, אמן

En 1964, el Papa Pablo VI visitó Israel, pero se negó a visitar a los jefes de otras religiones, insistiendo en que vinieran a visitarlo.
