    • short_info<p><em>Hakham</em> <strong>Abdallah (Ovadia) Somekh</strong>  was a rosh yeshiva and posek of Iraqi Jewry.</p>
    • info<p>Rabbi (<em>Hakham) </em>Abdallah Somekh was born in 1813 in Baghdad to Abraham Somekh, himself a descendant of Nissim Gaon; he was the eldest of eight brothers and eight sisters. He studied under Rabbi Yaakov Harofe. He married Sarah, who bore him the children Saleh, Haron, Raphael, Khatoon, Abraham, Sasson, Massouda, Rachel and Simha.</p> <h2>His life</h2> <p>At first he earned his living as a merchant, but he devoted himself to the field of education when he saw the level of Torah study wane in Baghdad. Hakham Abdallah became head of the yeshiva <em>Midrash Abu Menashe</em> (established in 1840 by Heskel Menashe Zebaida); the yeshiva was later expanded and renamed <em>Midrash Bet Zilkha</em> and remained in operation until 1951.</p> <p>As rosh yeshiva, Hakham Somekh was teacher of several Sephardi sages including his brother-in-law, Rabbi Yosef Chaim ("the <em>Ben Ish Chai</em>"), and Rabbi Yaakov Chaim Sofer ("the <em>Kaf HaChaim</em>"). He issued a great number of rulings, particularly in matters of shechita (Jewish slaughter of animals) and treifot—these rulings have been published in the work <em>Zibhei Tzedek</em> (Baghdad 1914, 2 vols), which became the handbook for Baghdadi Jews throughout India and the Far East. He also authored Responsa on all of the Shulchan Aruch.</p> <h2>His Death</h2> <p>Hakham Abdallah died on Friday night September 13, 1889 during a cholera epidemic, and he was buried in the courtyard of the tomb of Yehoshua Kohen Gadol.</p>

      • text<p style="text-align:right"> </p> <p style="text-align:right">הרב עבדאללה סומך נולד בבגדאד לכאתון ולרב אברהם יוסף יחזקאל, שהיה עשיר ותלמיד חכם, בן למשפחת צאצאי רבנו נסים. למד תורה והתחנך אצל הרב יעקב בר יוסף הרופא, שהיה אחד מגדולי הדיינים בעיראק בדור שלפניו, ובספרו "חלק יעקב" כינה את תלמידו "תלמידי המובהק והנבון".</p> <p style="text-align:right">בהגיעו לפרקו נישא לשרה, בת-דודו יצחק. בתקופה שלאחר נישואיו, בין לימוד תורה למשנהו, החל לעסוק במסחר כשותף עם הסוחר הבגדאדי רבי משה כבאזה. כשראה כי החינוך ולימוד התורה מתחיל להתמעט בקרב הצעירים בבגדאד, החליט לעזוב את עסקי המסחר כדי להתמסר לדור הצעיר. הוא אסף עשרה אברכים ולימד אותם במשך ימות השבוע ללא תמורה. כשראה זאת הגביר הבגדאדי יחזקאל ראובן, החליט להקים בית מדרש בו יוכלו התלמידים ללמוד באופן מסודר. בשנת 1840 (ה׳ת"ר) רכש הגביר חצר ובנה בשטחה מבנה בית מדרש לו קרא "מדרש אבו מנשי" (שהתפתח בהמשך למדרש בית זלכה) והקדישו ללימוד בידי הרב ותלמידיו, כשהוא מקציב לתלמידים משכורות חודשיות. הרב עבדאללה עמד בראש הישיבה עד לפטירתו.</p> <p style="text-align:right">הרב שלמה בכור חוצין כתב בהצפירה בשנת ה'תר"ן (1889) על הרב עבדאללה סומך:</p> <blockquote> <p style="text-align:right">"היה גדול בתורה ובעבודה ובגמילות חסדים, והוא אשר השיב העטרה ליושנה, עטרת התורה לישיבת בבל, אחר אשר הוסרה מאתה זה כמה מאות בשנים, כי הוא יסד בית מדרש גדול ורחב, והעמיד תלמידים הרבה, והרביץ תורה בישראל וכמעט כל החכמים והרבנים והמו"ץ (והמורי צדק) אשר במדינות בבל פרס ומדי וארץ הודו יצקו מים על ידו ושתו מבאר מים אשר חפר. ורוב ככל אחינו בית ישראל שבמדינות האלו קוראים אותו בשם אסתאיי (מלמדי), היינו רבי ומארי, כדרך שהיו קוראים לרבנו הקדוש בשם רבי סתם..."</p> <p style="text-align:right">— <cite>אהרן סורסקי, <strong>אורות ממזרח : תולדות רועים רוחניים ליהדות הספרדית</strong>, תשל"ד, עמוד עא.</cite></p> </blockquote> <p style="text-align:right">קובצי השו"ת שחיבר מכילים שאלות שנשלחו אליו מרחבי עיראק, מהודו ומפרס. השאלות מעידות על תקופה של שינויים רבים בחייהם של השואלים, שנבעו מתהליכי מודרניזציה אשר היו מלווים בחידושים טכנולוגיים, שיטות חדשות של ארגון חברתי ותרבותי ועוד. מתשובותיו, במיוחד לקהילה הבגדאדית שהיגרה להודו, עולה כי הרב סומך קיבל בצורה לא מאיימת את חידושי המודרנה, ואפשר לשואלים להשתלב בנורמות המקובלות בעולם בו הם חיים, כל זאת מבלי לזנוח את דרך התורה. חלק קטן מתשובותיו נדפסו בסוף ספרו "זבחי צדק" ומאות תשובות אחרות היו מכורכים בשני כרכים ומונחים בחדר ישיבתו עוד מלפני מלחמת העולם הראשונה, ומאז לא נודע בידי מי נפלו.</p> <p style="text-align:right">בשנת תרמ"ז (1887) נכתב בעיתון דער איזראעליט על השאלות שהופנו לרבי עבדאללה:</p> <blockquote> <p style="text-align:right">"בדרך כלל הקהילות בפרס ובאסיה התיכונית מתחילים שוב פעם לפנות לבגדאד בשאלות דת ודין וראש הישיבה שלנו עסוק מאד בתשובות על שאלות אלו. כך מתאמת הפתגם של יהודי ארם-נהריים כי מבגדאד תצא תורה ודבר ה' מישיבותיה. השאלות נוגעות בעיקר בהלכות גטין וקידושין, שבהן אין רבני פרס בקיאין. בדרך כלל כותבים אותם בעברית או בארמית, אבל לפעמים גם בערבית, בפרסית או בתורכית"</p> </blockquote> <h3 style="text-align:right">פטירתו ואירועי קבורתו</h3> <p style="text-align:right">כשפרצה מגפת הכולרה בעיראק בשנת 1889, נדבק בה הרב עבדאללה בהיותו בכפר "גרארה" הסמוך לבגדאד, וראשי הקהילה החזירוהו לבגדאד כדי שיתרפא. מאמצי הרופאים עלו בתוהו, וב-13 בספטמבר 1889 (י"ח באלול ה'תרמ"ט, ליל מוצאי שבת) הלך לעולמו. בעקבות המגפה, הוצא צו מטעם הממשלה האוסר קבורת מתים בבית הקברות הסמוך לבגדאד, ונכבדי הקהל הרב אברהם הלל והרב ששון סמוחה, ביקשו היתר ממושל בגדאד לקבור את הרב עבדאללה בבית הקברות הסמוך לעיר, ונענו בסירוב. במקום זאת אישר המושל בכתב ידו לקבור את הרב בחצר ״יהושע כהן גדול״, לצד קברו של רבו, הרב יעקב הרופא, שנמצא מעברו השני של נהר החידקל.</p> <p style="text-align:right">כשהחל מסע הלוויה וההספדים, הופיעה קבוצת פורעים מוסלמים ובראשם מוכתר מחוז "אל-כרך", ודרשו ממשתתפי הלוויה לעזוב את המקום בטענה שחל עליהם איסור  לקבור במקום. כשהוצג בפניהם האישור ממושל העיר, החלו להכות את משתתפי הלוויה.</p> <p style="text-align:right">משלחת נכבדים מהקהילה היהודית נשלחה אל המושל, וזה האחרון שלח פלוגת פרשים, כדי לאפשר ליהודים לקבור את הרב עבדאללה. המוכתר מנגד, הביא למקום המון מוסלמי מוסת, ומהומה פרצה במקום. בין המהומה והמולת האנשים, הצליחו לטפס ששה יהודים מעל לחומה שהקיפה את חצר הקבורה, פתחו את שער הכניסה, דרכו הכניסו את מיתת הרב וקברוהו בזריזות.</p> <p style="text-align:right">בימים שלאחר מכן, הפיץ המוכתר זיבג ידיעות על משתתפי הלוויה היהודים שכביכול הכו מוסלמים. מושל בגדאד שאישר בכתב ידו את מקום הקבורה, התכחש לאישורו, והורה לעצור את נכבדי הקהילה היהודית -       • text<p>Su vida</p> <p>Al principio se ganó la vida como comerciante, pero se dedicó al campo de la educación cuando vio el nivel de estudio de la Torá menguar en Bagdad. Hakham Abdallah se convirtió en jefe de la yeshiva Midrash Abu Menashe (establecida en 1840 por Heskel Menashe Zebaida); la yeshiva fue más tarde ampliada y renombrada Midrash Bet Zilkha y permaneció en funcionamiento hasta 1951.</p> <p>Como rosh yeshiva, Hakham Somekh fue profesor de varios sabios sefardíes, incluyendo a su cuñado, el rabino Yosef Chaim y el rabino Yaakov Chaim Sofer. Emitió un gran número de sentencias, particularmente en asuntos de shechita (matanza judía de animales) y treifot, estas resoluciones han sido publicadas en la obra Zibhei Tzedek (Baghdad 1914, 2 vols), que se convirtió en el manual para los judíos de Baghdadi en toda la India y el Lejano Oriente.
