    • info<p><b>Rabbi Saul Levi Morteira</b> or <b>Mortera</b> (<abbr title="circa">c.</abbr> 1596  – 10 February 1660) was a Dutch rabbi of Portuguese descent.</p> <p> </p> <h3>His life</h3> <p>In a Spanish poem Daniel Levi de Barrios speaks of him as being a native of Germany ("<i>de Alemania natural</i>"). When in 1616 Morteira escorted the body of the physician Elijah Montalto from France to Amsterdam, the Sephardic congregation Beth Jaacob in Amsterdam (House of Jacob) elected him hakham in succession to Moses ben Aroyo.</p> <p>Morteira was the founder of the congregational school Keter Torah, in the highest class of which he taught <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talmud" title="Talmud">Talmud</a> and Jewish philosophy. He had also to preach three times a month, and received an annual remuneration of 600 guilders and 100 baskets of turf. Among his most distinguished pupils were <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baruch_Spinoza" title="Baruch Spinoza">Baruch Spinoza</a>, Moses Zacuto and Abraham Cohen Pimentel. Morteira and Isaac da Fonseca Aboab (Manasseh ben Israel was at that time in England) were the members of the mahamad, the political arm of the community, which pronounced on 27 July 1656 the decree of excommunication ("cherem") against Spinoza.</p> <h2>Works</h2> <p>Some of Morteira's pupils published <i>Gibeat Shaul</i> (Amsterdam, 1645), a collection of fifty sermons on the Pentateuch, selected from 500 derashot written by Morteira.</p> <p>Morteira wrote in Spanish <i>Tractado de la Verdad de la Ley</i> (translated into Hebrew by Isaac Gomez de Gosa under the title <i>Torat Moshch</i>, in 66 chapters), apologetics of Judaism and attacks against Christianity. This work (excerpts from which are given in Jacques Basnage, <i>Histoire de la Religion des Juifs</i>) and other writings of Morteira, on immortality, revelation, etc., are still in manuscript.</p> <p>Morteira's polemical sermons in Hebrew against the Catholic Church were published, but his Portuguese writings against Calvinism remained unpublished.</p> <p> </p> <p>May the merit of the tzadik  <b>Rabbi Saul Levi Morteira protect us all.       • text<p style="text-align: right;">רבי שאול נולד בוונציה בשנת ה'שנ"ו, למשפחה מצאצאי אנוסי ספרד. היה תלמידו של ר' יהודה אריה ממודינה ואחר כך של אליהו מונטאלטו. בשנת 1612 סייע בניסוח הטיעונים בויכוח פדובה. בשנת ה'שע"ב בערך, בגיל 15, היגר לפריז, יחד עם הרופא אליהו מונטאלטו שלקחו עמו. כשנפטר הרופא בשנת ה'שע"ו עבר להולנד יחד עם גופתו של המנוח, קבר אותה בבית הקברות בית חיים ליד אמסטרדם ועבר לגור בעיר. עם בואו, בגיל 20, התמנה לרב ודרשן בקהילת הספרדים "קהלת יעקב". למד תורה אצל רבי יצחק עוזיאל מרבני אמסטרדם, שהגיע מפאס שבמרוקו. כעבור 22 שנים, אחרי שהקהילות הספרדיות התאחדו, נבחר מורטירה לאב"ד בבית הדין שהורכב מהחכמים מנשה בן ישראל, יצחק אבוהב דה-פונסיקה, ודוד בן יוסף פרדו.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">באמסטרדם יסד מורטירה את ישיבת "עץ חיים" הספרדית (ישיבה נוספת בשם זה, אשכנזית, הוקמה מאוחר יותר באמסטרדם לצד הישיבה הספרדית הוותיקה). בישיבה זו למד אצל מורטירה הפילוסוף ברוך שפינוזה, שנטען כי עיקרי משנתו הפנתאיסטית כבר הושמעו על ידי רבו, מורטירה, שהסווה אותם בדרושים תורניים. במהלך השנים נפלו סכסוכים בין מורטירה לבין רבי מנשה בן ישראל. בישיבה זו למדו גם תלמידיו רבי משה זכות ועוד.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">נפטר בשנת 1660 ונקבר בבית הקברות "בית חיים" ליד אמשטרדם.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">מעמדו כאיש הגות לא פגם במעמדו כאיש הלכה, והתנצחות הלכתית שלו עם רבי יעקב ששפורטש נשמרה.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">לפי עדותם של מדפיסי ספרו "גבעת שאול" במהדורתו השנייה, הוכנס ציור דמותו בתוך כרך של מהדורתו הראשונה של הספר, והם הדפיסו אותו. המקור הראשוני של הציור הודפס לראשונה על ידי יוהאן כריסטוף וגנזייל ב-Sota שלו, אלטדורף1674, ליד עמ' 407. בשל כך, ובשל העובדה שהתפילין שבתמונה אינן מונחות במקומן הנדרש על פי ההלכה, נטען כי אין מדובר בציור אותנטי.</p> <h2 style="text-align: right;">חיבוריו</h2> <p style="text-align: right;"><a href="https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%A7%D7%95%D7%91%D7%A5:Givaat_shaul.jpg"><img alt="" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7c/Givaat_shaul.jpg/250px-Givaat_shaul.jpg" style="height:369px; width:250px" /></a></p> <p style="text-align: right;">שער מהדורת הספר השנייה, ובו מחיקה לא מוצלחת ומעוררת חשד אודות פרקי תולדות המחבר. שנת ההדפסה היא 1912, ולא כתאריך העברי שבטעות לא שונה מהמהדורה הראשונה – תרס"ב</p> <p style="text-align: right;">חלק מדרשותיו של מורטירה, כונסו לספר בשם "גבעת שאול". הספר הודפס תחילה על ידי תלמידיו של מורטירה בשנת ה'ת"ה באמסטרדם, וכולל 50 דרשות.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">בנוסף הודפס הספר בוורשה בשתי מהדורות. במהדורתו הראשונה של הספר ישנו מאמר בן שבעה פרקים מאת המו"ל, יוסף שיין איש הומל, המספר את תולדות המחבר ובני זמנו, ומתייחס גם לתלמידו של מורטירה, שפינוזה. ההתייחסות לשפינוזה חיובית: המו"ל כתב שרעיונותיו של שפינוזה נבעו במידת מה מרעיונותיו של רבו שסבר אף הוא כמוהו, אלא שהסתיר את הדברים בסגנון דרשני תורני, ואף השמועה לפיה ר' שאול השתתף בהחרמת שפינוזה אין בה אמת, ובניו של רבי יצחק אבוהב הם שהפיצו את השמועה הזו.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">אך כבר בדפוס הראשון הודבק על עמוד זה עמוד אחר, ובו מתוארים הדברים בצורה שונה לגמרי: שמו של שפינוזה מוזכר רק בראשי תיבות; השקפותיו של ר' שאול היו רגילות, ושפינוזה הוא זה שהקדיח את תבשילו; ומשעה שהקדיח את תבשילו אחז אף מורטירה במידת האמת בידו והשתתף גם הוא בהחרמתו של שפינוזה. החוקר החב"די חיים ליברמן כותב על כך כי שתי הגרסאות גם יחד אין להם על מה להסתמך מבחינת מסמכים היסטוריים, ואינם אלא מהרהורי לבם של הכותבים, הראשון מהרהורי המו"ל, והשינוי מהרהורי אנשים אחרים שכפו את דעתם עליו כנראה. הוא משער שאולי האחראי לכך הוא ר' חיים סולובייצ'יק, שכתב הסכמה על הספר בו ניכר שהערכתו את ר' שאול שונה לגמרי מהערכת המו"ל. במהדורה השנייה של הספר שיצאה עשר שנים אחר כך, הושמטו כבר תולדות המחבר לגמרי. בנוסף, הושמטו מהספר שני מאמרים מטעמי צנזורה הרוסית, ונדפסו בנפרד תחת השם "קצה הגבעה", ורשה ה'תרע"ג.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">דרשותיו מתאפיינות בעומק מחשבתי, כאשר כל דרשה מיוחדת לליבון נושא הגותי אחד מכל היבטיו. הוא מרבה גם לעודד את האנוסים, ומדבר בשבחם. הוא מתמרמר על הרודפים אחרי הממון, ותולה את הייסורים שנפלו בחלקם של אנוסי ספרד, ברדיפתם אחר העושר. הוא מזהיר את הצעירים מפני השתמדות.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">בנוסף חיבר ספר בספרדית ובו טענות והשגות נגד הדת הנוצרית, בשם "Tractado de la Verdad de la Ley". כמו כן הודפסו בשנת ה'תי"ב דברי הספד שנשא על תלמידו, משה מירקאדו.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">פולמוס הגותי התעורר בין מורטירה לבין רעו, רבי יצחק אבוהב דה-פונסיקה, בדבר השאלה האם בן ישראל עתיד להגיע לתיקון בסופם של תהליכי זיכוך שונים, ובכל מקרה יזכה לעולם הבא, או שמא יכול יהודי להרשיע עד שיאבד את חלקו לעולם הבא לגמרי. מורטירה סבר שחלקו יכול לאבד, ודה-פונסיקה חלק עליו. הוויכוחים בשאלה זו, שעניינה רבות את האנוסים וקהילותיהם, באו בדפוס בספר "כתבי רבינו יצחק אבוהב (דה פונסקה)- חכמי רסיפי ואמשטרדם", בהוצאת "מכון ירושלים", ירושלים ה'תשס"ז.</p> <h2 style="text-align: right;">זכותו תגן עלינו ועל כל ישראל, אמן</h2>

      • text<h3>Su vida</h3> <p>En un poema español, Daniel Levi de Barrios habla de él como nativo de Alemania ("de Alemania natural"). Cuando en 1616 Morteira escoltó el cuerpo del médico Elijah Montalto desde Francia a Amsterdam, la congregación sefardí Beth Jaacob en Amsterdam (Casa de Jacob) lo eligió hakham en sucesión a Moisés ben Aroyo</p> <p>Morteira fue el fundador de la escuela congregacional Keter Torah, en la clase más alta de la cual enseñó Talmud y filosofía judía. También tuvo que predicar tres veces al mes, y recibió una remuneración anual de 600 florines y 100 canastas de césped. Entre sus alumnos más distinguidos estaban Baruch Spinoza, Moses Zacuto y Abraham Cohen Pimentel. Morteira e Isaac da Fonseca Aboab (Manasés ben Israel estaba en ese momento en Inglaterra) eran los miembros del mahamad, el brazo político de la comunidad, que pronunció el 27 de julio de 1656 el decreto de excomunión ("cherem") contra Spinoza.</p> <p><img src="http://dailyzohar.com/tzadikim/files/uploads/102841.png" style="height:358px; width:279px" /></p> <h3>Trabajos</h3> <p>Algunos de los alumnos de Morteira publicaron Gibeat Shaul (Amsterdam, 1645), una colección de cincuenta sermones sobre el Pentateuco, seleccionados entre 500 derashot escritos por Morteira.</p> <p>Morteira escribió en español Tractado de la Verdad de la Ley (traducido al hebreo por Isaac Gómez de Gosa bajo el título Torat Moshch, en 66 capítulos), apologética del judaísmo y ataques contra el cristianismo. Este trabajo (extractos de los cuales se dan en Jacques Basnage, Histoire de la Religion des Juifs) y otros escritos de Morteira, sobre la inmortalidad, la revelación, etc., todavía están en manuscrito.</p> <p>Los sermones polémicos de Morteira en hebreo contra la Iglesia Católica fueron publicados, pero sus escritos portugueses contra el calvinismo permanecieron inéditos</p> <p>Que el mérito del tzadik Rabino Saul Levi Morteira nos proteja a todos.
