 short_info Head of the Bais Din in Cracow. A genius who was fluent in all avenues of Torah including Kabbalah and Chassidus

Born in Austrian Poland, his rebbe refused to teach him any longer when he reached the age of 12, and between that age and his marriage at 19, he wrote eleven sefarim (books). Among his sefarim were Gilyonei Hashas, Shiv'im Panim LaTorah Lekach Tov, Esvan D'Oraysa, and Beis HaOtzar, a Talmudic encyclopedia. His only child, Miriam, married the heir to the leadership of the Kotzker chassidim, but he abdicated that position in order to remain near his father-in-law, Rav Yosef. At age 46, Rav Yosef left his wealthy father-in-law's home and, for the first time, had to seek a living. He found a position as one of several rabbinical judges in Krakow. During World War I, Rav Yosef fled with hundreds of other Rabbis to Vienna, where he died. May thre merit of the tzadik Rabbi Yosef Enge protect us all. Amen

 textהרב יוסף ענגיל נולד בעיירה טרנוב שבדרום-מזרח פולין ביום השביעי של חג החנוכה ה'תרי"ט (1859). גדל לאב שהיה סוחר ות"ח. אמו שהייתה שייכת לחסידות צאנז, לקחה אותו בילדותו לבקר אצל האדמו"ר בעל הדברי חיים מצאנז. עוד בהיותו ילד כונה "העילוי מטרנוב". בתחילה למד עם מלמד אך עד מהרה התחיל ללמוד לבדו ורכש בקיאות רבה, בצעירותו למד בחברותא עם קרוב משפחתו, הרב שמואל ענגיל, גאב״ד ראדומישלא. כמו כן היה נוהג ללמוד עם חברו, הרב מאיר אריק. תקופה מסוימת ישב בעיר בנדין ללא אזרחות רוסית, מה שגרם להלשנות. במהלך מלחמת רוסיה-יפן בשנת ה'תרס"ו (1906) החליטו הרוסים 'להלאים' את הבניין בו השקיעה אשתו של רבי יוסף ענגיל את רוב כספם והם נאלצו לעקור לקרקוב, שם קיבל הר"י ענגיל משרה, תחילה כדיין אך מהרה התמנה לאב בית דין עד לפרוץ מלחמת העולם הראשונה. עקב מלחמת העולם הראשונה נאלץ לעקור בשנת ה'תרע"ד (1914) לווינה האוסטרית, שם שהה עד לפטירתו בא' בחשוון ה'תר"ף (1919). בהלוויתו בעיר ווינה השתתפו כעשרים אלף איש. בתו היחידה הייתה אשת הרב יצחק מנחם מורגנשטרן, נכדו של הרבי מקוצק, שהוציא לאור חלק מכתביו. לפי הרב מנחם מנדל כשר, הרב ענגיל השתתף באספת רבנים שהתכנסה בווינה לפי דרישת הממשלה האוסטרית, כדי שיחתמו נגד הצהרת בלפור. הוא מנע את החתימה בהכריזו "היד החותמת תיקצץ!". <h2 style="text-align: right;">הגותו</h2> דרך לימודו, כפי שמשתקפת בספריו, מתאפיינת בשני פרטים עיקריים, הקיימים גם בכתבי בן-תקופתו הגאון הרוגצ'ובי: <ul> <li style="text-align: right;">מלאכת הליקוט - ר' יוסף בונה את חידושיו על יסוד מובאות תלמודיות רבות המשלימות זו את זו. מתוך מקורות אלו, שבדרך-כלל עוסקים בסוגיות שונות בתוכנן, מאתר הוא את היסוד המהותי המשותף להם. בשונה מכתבי הרוגצ'ובי שמפאת כתיבתם התמציתית (הכוללת לעיתים ציון מראי-מקומות בלבד) זקוק המעיין להתייגע להבין את כוונת הדברים, היטיב ר' יוסף בכתיבתו הרהוטה להביע את ההגדרות, כאשר ללומד הדברים נותר רק הצורך להתאים את ההגדרה לנושאים השונים. יש לציין, כי בדרך לימוד זו מתייחדים השניים מרוב הרבנים וראשי הישיבות בדורם שהעדיפו להתמקד בנושא בודד, על-פי רוב, ולדלות ממנו את ההגדרות (כאשר הבולט שבהם הוא ר' חיים מבריסק).</li> <li style="text-align: right;">חקירות מחודשות - לדרך ה'חקירה' (דילמה) התלמודית שהתפתחה בעיקר במאתיים השנים האחרונות, תרם ר' יוסף באופן מיוחד בהתמקדו גם בתפיסות מופשטות יותר. דוגמה אופיינית לכך היא 'חקירתו' האם ריבוי הכמות גובר ומכריע ביחס לאיכות, דילמה שהשלכותיה מתפרסות על מגוון נושאים: האם עדיף לתת סכום גדול בבת אחת לצדקה או שמא לחלקו לסכומים קטנים בנתינות נפרדות; Entre sus sefarim estaban Gilyonei Hashas, Shiv'im Panim LaTorah Lekach Tov, Esvan D'Oraysa y Beis HaOtzar, una enciclopedia talmúdica. Su única hija, Miriam, se casó con el heredero del liderazgo de los jasidim Kotzker, pero él abdicó de esa posición para permanecer cerca de su suegro, Rav Iosef. A la edad de 46 años, Rav Yosef dejó la casa de su rico suegro y, por primera vez, tuvo que buscar un sustento. Encontró un puesto como uno de varios jueces rabínicos en Cracovia.
